Welcome to Year 6

We hope you had a lovely summer and are feeling rested and ready for a busy year full of hard work and excitement.

We are looking forward to getting to know you and working together so that we have a fun and productive year. We hope that you enjoy the new challenges and many responsibilities that comes with being in Year 6! We have many exciting things planned to ensure that your final year of Primary School is as memorable as possible.

Reading in Year 6   We encourage children to read every night at home. Your child will have two books- a reading book and a library book. Please record any reading your child has completed at home in their reading record. Children will have many opportunities to read at school. These will include: whole class guided reading sessions, class library sessions, 1-1 reading with an adult and reading for pleasure.

Spelling in Year 6

Every Monday, children will receive a list of spellings. They should learn these for the weekly spelling test, which takes place the following Monday.

Children will be tested on the statutory word list for years 5 and 6 at various points in the school year. Please ensure that your child takes time to learn both their weekly spellings and the meanings of the words.

Homework in Year 6

Homework in Year 6 allows children to take independence of their own learning. We suggest that each child does at least 20 minutes reading every night, time spent practicing spellings (including meaning and context) and time spent practicing times tables and division facts. This should total to about one hour of home learning focusing on skills that will help them develop in many areas of the Year 6 curriculum.

General Reminders…

  • Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on Mondays (Manchester City Coach) and Friday.
  • Children may bring in a water bottle for classroom use throughout the day.
  • Children may bring in a healthy snack to eat at playtime.
