Earth and space

Year 5 have continued with their learning all about Earth and space. This week, we focused on the solar system. Specifically, the size of the planets and their distance away from the sun. To deepen our understanding of their true size, we used workable, comparative measurements. We used a compass to help us draw out the planets. We found that Mercury was the smallest planet at only 0.5cm as a equivalent diameter while Jupiter was the biggest at a whopping 14cm! We then compared this to the size of the sun which took up 16 pieces of A4 paper. We then used measurements to work out each planets distance from the sun using rulers. This helped us understand how close the ‘rocky plants’ are to the sun compared to the ‘gas giants’. We carried on with our learning about space at Jodrell Bank today. Look out for our photos coming soon!
