We hope you have had a lovely time over the summer and we are sure you are now ready to begin the final year of primary school in Year 6!

We are looking forward to getting to know you and working together so that we have a very exciting and productive year. We hope that you enjoy the new challenges and approaches to learning that Year 6 has to offer! There are so many events and experiences to look forward to this year to celebrate your final year at primary school.
Reading in Year 6
By Year 6, most children have the ability and skills required to enjoy reading independently.  We encourage children to read regularly at home. Children will also have the opportunity to build on reading skills and strategies with their teacher during guided class reading sessions.

Spelling in Year 6
Every Monday, children will receive a list of spellings that should be learned for the weekly spelling test, which takes place every Friday.

Children will be tested on the statutory word list for years 5 and 6, stuck on the inside back cover of your child’s homework book, at various points in the school year. Please ensure that your child takes time to learn both their weekly spellings and the meanings of the words.

Homework in Year 6
Homework is given out on a Friday, and collected in the following Tuesday.  Other homework may be set throughout the year. This will usually be related to the topic being studied. Please make time to read with your child and also give time for your child to practise their times tables and number bonds.
General Reminders…

  • Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school from Monday to Friday each week and that all items are clearly labelled.  P.E. will take place every Wednesday and Friday.
  • Your child may be equipped with a pencil case, a pencil, a rubber, a pencil sharpener(that collects sharpenings) and a ruler. Children can also bring in coloured pencils, felt- tipped pens and highlighters if they wish.
  • Children may bring in a water bottle for classroom use throughout the day.
